Heather Dennis is a much-loved teacher at Christ the King CVA, who has also been receiving treatment for breast cancer at the Nottingham Breast Institute.
After being diagnosed with stage 3 inflammatory breast cancer in June 2017, Heather was enrolled on one of Professor Chan’s clinical trials at the Breast Institute. She responded phenomenally well to the trial and, by January 2018, her tumour had shrunk enough for surgeons to perform a mastectomy. After the operation, her doctors confirmed a complete pathological response to the trial – which means that there was no evidence of any active cancer cells in the breast tissue they removed.
Heather is so grateful to the Breast Institute staff for their care and compassion and their dedication to making her better. “I have no doubt that, given my starting point and the size of my tumour, I would not still be here today had it not been for the trial. I have also been incredibly fortunate to have first class care from my consultants and the nurses, who work tirelessly and are always positive and kind.”
Heather and her students at Christ the King Academy wanted to thank Breast Institute doctors and nurses. On 17th July, the school hosted a fun run called Stride For Life. Heather’s students of all ages hopped, skipped, walked, or ran 1km around the school field to raise money for the Breast Institute. In total they raised £1275.46! 💕
Last week, Heather visited the Breast Institute with her student helpers, Sophia and Aiyana (year 8) and their big sister Jade (year 11). Together, they presented a cheque to Breast Institute staff who cared for Heather: Consultant Oncoplastic Surgeon Mr Kristjan Asgeirsson, Oncoplastic Registrar Dr Georgette Oni and Breast Care Nurse Joanne Featherstone.
On behalf of the Breast Institute, we want to say A HUGE THANK YOU to every single student or member of staff who took part in Stride For Life, and everyone who sponsored them. The money raised will make a huge difference to other women in Nottingham who are receiving treatment for breast cancer 👏👏
