Drama

Drama at Christ the King is celebrated, valued and held in high esteem with both staff and students. We feel that Drama has a significant role to play in any student’s education, creating and developing confidence and life skills. Drama is offered as a discreet subject at Key Stage 3 taught in mixed ability classes.  Students work on specific skills such as the development of dramatic techniques, movement and vocal skills, role-play, improvisations, characterisation and script work.

Drama continues to be a successful option choice at GCSE and A Level, where we aim to provide a continuation and extension of the work covered at Key Stage 3.  It also gives the students a chance to follow their interest in this subject to a greater depth while learning a range of drama and theatre skills.  In 2017 our results were the best ever and reflected the hard work and dedication from all our students. Drama encourages confidence and understanding in a variety of situations, with the development of co-operative skills through working and contributing in a group and class discussions. Curriculum work is celebrated with GCSE and A Level performance evenings throughout the year. This gives the students a chance to share their work with parents and staff.

The Cast of Sister Act 2018

The Drama Department is also responsible for producing the school show. We like to vary the productions and give students a chance to appear in both musicals and plays. Recent successes have included Sister Act, Oliver, The Crucible and Hairspray.  The shows are not only enjoyed by the students involved in the productions as they have also received much critical acclaim from rapturous audiences and our shows are sold out well in advance!

We encourage students to see as much live theatre as possible and we have strong links with both Nottingham Playhouse and Theatre Royal. Many of our students sing, dance and act outside of school and we encourage these students to take leading roles either performing or choreographing within the school production. We also have strong links with Nottingham Actors Studio where we have had success with previous students go on to gain professional roles within film and TV.

We are very proud to work with Sitelines, a professional theatre company who come and work with our Drama Academy. Auditions are held every year for places available to Year 7, 8 and 9.   Sitelines directors and producers run the academy here at Christ The King.   They work with our very best and most talented KS3 students each week and work hard in encouraging our students to achieve their very best in acting.  Students are treated as professional actors and create exceptional performances which are showcased at events throughout the year.
