Literacy & LRC

At Christ the King, we recognise that strong literacy skills are essential for success across the curriculum and beyond school. Literacy underpins learning, supports personal development and enables students to participate confidently in society.

We believe that effective literacy:

  • improves students’ self-esteem, motivation and behaviour
  • enables students to learn independently and express themselves with confidence
  • opens up personal pathways to success and active participation in society, culture and the economy
  • equips students with the vocabulary, expression and organisational skills needed to meet the demands of different subjects
  • supports learning through reading beyond students’ immediate experiences
  • helps students develop clear, structured thinking through writing
  • enables reflection, revision and evaluation in both spoken and written language
  • develops higher-order thinking skills through responding to challenging questions.

Reading for Pleasure and Learning

To support the development of strong reading habits, students read together during form time three times each week, led by their form tutor. This regular practice helps build fluency, comprehension and a love of reading, while also supporting vocabulary development across all subjects.

Through our whole-school commitment to literacy, we aim to ensure every student is equipped with the skills they need to succeed academically and thrive beyond the classroom.

DEAR Time

During DEAR time – Drop Everything and Read – the whole school community pauses and enjoys a period of quiet reading.

Students read a book of their choice while staff read alongside them, modelling positive reading habits and showing that reading is important for everyone. These regular sessions help to build reading fluency, broaden vocabulary and develop concentration, while also encouraging a lifelong love of reading.

DEAR time forms an important part of our wider literacy strategy and supports students’ learning across all subjects.

Lexia

Lexia is an online reading programme designed to strengthen literacy skills in a personalised way. The programme adapts to each student’s level, providing targeted practice in areas such as vocabulary, comprehension and fluency. Progress is closely monitored by staff, allowing us to celebrate success and provide additional support where needed. Lexia helps students build confidence and make secure progress in their reading.

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC)

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) plays a key role in supporting literacy, reading for pleasure and independent learning.

The LRC is open:

  • every morning from 8:00-8:45am;
  • every lunchtime;
  • after school until 4:30pm, Monday to Thursday, as part of our homework club.
  • throughout the day for Sixth Form students

During opening times, students can change their reading book, complete homework, carry out internet research and access careers information.

Reading Lessons in the LRC

English reading lessons for Years 7 and 8 are timetabled in the LRC on a rota basis. During these sessions, students read, review and discuss texts, and are supported in choosing and changing reading books.

Borrowing Books

Students may borrow one book at a time for up to four weeks, after which it should be renewed or returned. We ask that all books are looked after carefully while on loan.

Computer Access

Computers are available for students to use for homework and research on a first come, first served basis.
