Knowledge Organisers

All students in Key Stage 3 are provided with Knowledge Organisers at the start of each term. These support learning in class and at home and help students revise effectively for assessments.

Research shows that knowledge organisers have a positive impact on progress for students of all abilities. By using them consistently across Key Stage 3, we also enable parents to support learning at home with a clear and structured approach.

What are Knowledge Organisers?

A Knowledge Organiser sets out the essential knowledge that students need to learn and remember for each topic in every subject. They usually fit onto one or two pages and include key facts, vocabulary and information.

By revisiting this knowledge regularly, students strengthen their memory and understanding, supporting their progress throughout Key Stage 3 and beyond.

How do students access Knowledge Organisers?

  • At the start of every term, KS3 students will receive their Knowledge Organisers during form time
  • KS4 students will receive subject specific Knowledge Organisers.
  • New Knowledge Organisers are created at the start of each term for all subjects
  • All Knowledge Organisers are also available below, so parents and students can access them at any time

How does it work?

At the start of each term, students receive new Knowledge Organisers containing the knowledge they will be learning in lessons. These are regularly referred to in class and form the basis of homework and revision.

Students are expected to spend one hour per day, five days a week, revising three subjects as directed on their homework timetable. The only exception is when students are asked to complete specific written tasks, such as maths practice or creative homework.

Teachers set weekly learning from the Knowledge Organisers and monitor understanding through regular low-stakes retrieval practice in lessons. This helps teachers identify gaps in knowledge and adapt teaching where needed.

How are Knowledge Organisers used for home learning?

Students are given an A4 exercise book in which they complete revision for all subjects. Around one page per subject should be completed using the Core 4 revision techniques taught in school, alongside the Knowledge Organiser guidance found at the front of each organiser.

Knowledge Organisers and workbooks are used daily in lessons, so students must bring them to school as part of their required equipment.

How can I support my child with this process?

  • Print off and display their home learning timetable
  • Encourage your child to attempt different techniques for revising
  • Encourage and reward them for completing one hour of revision each night
  • Test them along the way and ask them questions (all answers will be included in the knowledge organisers)
  • Make sure they bring their knowledge organisers
