Whole School Curriculum Intent

At Christ the King, our mission is to help every student develop the ambition to achieve excellence, with Christ at the heart of our community.

All staff work to promote our mission values of Community, Achieve, Respect and Encounter across all areas of school life.

Our whole school curriculum intent is outlined below. We aim:

  • To provide a broad and balanced curriculum built on the foundations of high expectations of all students
  • To provide an ambitious and challenging curriculum which provokes curiosity among students
  • To provide a coherent and sequenced curriculum where Catholicity and faith is at the centre of all that we say and do
  • To provide a diversity rich curriculum with regular connections to the local context
  • To be aspirational and provide pathways for students to reach their full potential, as well as developing them as young people who will have a positive influence on society after they leave our school

It is essential that the curriculum is organised in such a way that it provides students with the opportunity to learn expected behaviours and be successful in their learning so that we can deliver our mission and aims.

Knowledge Rich Curriculum

Our curriculum has been designed to be knowledge rich, helping students build strong understanding, memory and the ability to recall what they have learned. We believe every child is entitled to learn “the best that has been thought and said” (Matthew Arnold), and this principle has guided our curriculum since 2021.

Informed by educational research and effective practice in high-performing schools, our approach ensures students receive a high-quality education. This equips them with the knowledge, confidence and skills they need to succeed in further education, future careers and adult life.

Key Stage 3

Our Key Stage 3 curriculum offers a broad and balanced education that builds on learning from primary school. It has been carefully designed by subject specialists to be knowledge rich, ensuring students experience high-quality learning and make strong progress.

We aim to provide the best educational experience so that students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed for future study and life beyond school.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4, all students study the core subjects of RE, English, Maths and Science, alongside PE. Students also choose a range of GCSE and/or vocational subjects through our guided options process.

We encourage students to follow an EBacc pathway where appropriate, while also allowing flexibility so they can pursue their individual interests and strengths.

Students study GCSE courses in English Language, English Literature, Maths and Science (as three separate subjects), alongside four option subjects chosen from a wide range of areas including arts, humanities, languages and technology.

To meet individual needs, we may also:

  • offer extended work-related learning
  • allow students with exceptional ability to study more than one subject within a curriculum area
  • provide additional support for students who need time to consolidate learning through a reduced timetable of 25 lessons over two weeks
