Other Pathways After Sixth Form

While many students choose to progress to university, there are a wide range of other exciting and rewarding pathways available after Sixth Form. At CTK Sixth Form, we support students in exploring all opportunities so they can choose the route that best suits their ambitions, interests and strengths.

Through our careers programme, guidance sessions and external speakers, students are introduced to a variety of options that can lead to successful and fulfilling careers.

Apprenticeships allow students to earn a salary while gaining qualifications and valuable work experience. They combine practical training in the workplace with study towards a recognised qualification.

There are several levels of apprenticeships available to Sixth Form students, including:

  • Advanced Apprenticeships (Level 3)

  • Higher Apprenticeships (Levels 4–5)

  • Degree Apprenticeships (Levels 6–7)

These opportunities are offered by a wide range of employers across many industries including engineering, healthcare, business, construction, digital technology and finance.

Students can explore opportunities through the National Apprenticeship Service, which provides information about vacancies, application processes and training providers.

Some students choose to move directly into employment after Sixth Form. Many employers offer structured training programmes, allowing young people to gain experience, develop skills and progress within a career.

Students are encouraged to consider employment opportunities that include professional development and long-term progression.

Our Sixth Form team supports students with:

  • writing CVs and cover letters

  • preparing for job applications and interviews

  • developing employability skills

Some students decide to take a gap year before continuing with further study or employment. This can be a valuable opportunity to gain experience, travel, volunteer or develop new skills.

A gap year might include:

  • volunteering in the UK or abroad

  • work experience in a chosen career area

  • travel and cultural experiences

  • saving money before university or training

Students considering this option are encouraged to plan carefully so they can make the most of their time.

There are also many opportunities for students to continue their education through specialist training providers or vocational courses.

These may include areas such as:

  • creative industries

  • performing arts

  • sport and fitness

  • technical and industry-specific qualifications

These pathways often focus on developing practical skills and preparing students directly for employment within specific industries.
