Sixth Form Transition

We are committed to ensuring that every student feels confident, prepared and supported when making the step up into Sixth Form. Our transition programme begins well before students start Year 12 and continues throughout the first term.

Students are invited to experience Sixth Form life through our Open Evening and taster lesson sessions. This provides the opportunity to:

  • sample the curriculum
  • ask questions to teachers
  • understand how courses are assessed
  • explore the enrichment opportunities available

During Year 11, students take part in individual interviews to help them make informed choices about their next steps. They also attend sessions focused on successful learning habits and revision techniques to support strong GCSE outcomes and readiness for advanced study.

In July, students attend transition days where they receive key subject information, complete pre-course reading or tasks and begin to build relationships with staff and fellow students. These activities help establish a strong sense of community before the start of Sixth Form.

At the start of Year 12, students take part in further transition activities focused on:

  • Catholic life and our Sixth Form ethos
  • organisation and managing study time
  • effective note-taking
  • goal setting
  • independent learning strategies

These themes are revisited regularly during the first term, both in tutor time and within subjects, to ensure students develop the habits needed for success.

A dedicated retreat day takes place towards the end of September, giving students time for reflection, community building and spiritual development as they settle into Sixth Form life.

Our Sixth Form leaders, tutors and teachers are here every step of the way. We work closely with students to guide them through the transition, helping them grow in confidence, independence and ambition as they move into this exciting new stage of their education.

We warmly welcome students joining us from other schools. External applicants are invited to take part in our transition days so they can meet teachers, experience lessons and become familiar with Sixth Form life. Each student is paired with a current Sixth Former who acts as a buddy, offering guidance, answering questions and helping them settle quickly and confidently into our community.

We encourage all external applicants interested in applying for CTK Sixth Form to contact our Head of Sixth Form, Mr Reddington – nreddington@christtheking.notts.sch.uk
