Careers Curriculum

“Every young person needs high-quality career guidance to make informed decisions about their future. Good career guidance is a necessity for social mobility.” Gatsby Benchmarks for Good Careers Guidance.

Christ the King provides a comprehensive seven-year careers education program, carefully designed to cater to the unique needs of each student. Beginning in Year 7 and continuing through Year 13, we establish clear links between the curriculum and career opportunities. Students actively engage with employers, higher education institutions, and apprenticeship providers to explore their future pathways.

We work in partnership with further and higher education providers including Nottingham University and Nottingham Trent, local further education colleges such as Confetti, and local businesses and employers across Nottinghamshire, including the Police, DWP, Our Lady of Lourdes and the Army.

Our Work Related Work Programme Coordinator is Olivia Mason, and you can contact her with any questions by emailing omason@christtheking.notts.sch.uk

At CTK, we are dedicated to providing every pupil with access to meaningful careers guidance. We use the Compass tracking tool to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of our careers programme.

Additionally, Year 11 student and employer evaluations, along with interviews, help us measure the success of the programme, which is coordinated by our Work-Related Learning Coordinator.

Work Experience

Each year, Year 10 and Year 12 students at Christ the King participate in a work experience program. This provides them with valuable insights into the professional world, helping them develop essential skills and explore potential career paths. Through partnerships with local businesses and organisations, students gain hands-on experience that complements their academic learning and prepares them for future opportunities.

The video above will guide you in supporting your child with their work experience, covering everything from finding suitable placements to setting up a Unifrog account.

Your child should have received the login details for their Unifrog Work Experience account. This is a unique login which was sent to their school email address and should not be deleted. There is guidance on how to navigate this platform in the presentation above.

Please update UniFrog as and when placements are agreed. The completion of the student section will then trigger a response from the employer. If any section of UniFrog is incomplete, school will be unable to sign it off and agree to the placement going ahead.

Deadline for finding placements is 4th April 2025.

Mock Interviews – 25th – 29th November 2024.

Every year, we organise mock interviews for Year 10 and Year 13 students. These sessions are highly valued by students as they provide practical experience, boost confidence, and develop essential interview skills that prepare them for future opportunities in education and employment. We invite employers such as the DWP, the Police, the Army, OLOL, Nottinghamshire County Council and local businesses.

Students will prepare a CV and receive interview tips prior to their mock interviews. After the interviews, they will receive a detailed feedback sheet to help them improve and refine their skills further.

Events

During Careers Week, we host a variety of lunchtime talks featuring guest speakers from diverse industries, including the RAF, graphic design professionals, and representatives from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). These sessions provide students with valuable insights into different career paths and opportunities.

The Senior Leadership Team conducts interviews with Year 11 students to discuss their plans for the following year, whether that involves university, apprenticeships, sixth form, or other pathways. These conversations help ensure each student receives tailored guidance and support for their next steps.

We host a Careers Fair, providing students with the chance to explore a wide range of career options and learn about the paths required to achieve their goals.

Past exhibitors have included esteemed organizations and institutions such as Rolls Royce, Experian, the NHS, Junior Doctors, YMCA, Plastek Group, the RAF, Huddersfield University, Civica, Nottingham College, Brackenhurst College, and Confetti College, among many others!

We also organise a Speed Networking event, which is similar to our Careers Fair but with smaller groups of students. This allows for more detailed one-on-one conversations with employers. The event takes place shortly after the work experience, giving students the opportunity to reflect on their experiences and ask questions about potential career paths in a more focused setting.

Year 12 students visit Nottingham Trent University to explore campus life and learn more about university opportunities. This visit provides them with valuable insights into university courses, student life, and the transition to higher education, helping them make informed decisions about their future.
